Professor Gregory Carman started The Active Materials Laboratory when he joined the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1993.

The Active Materials Laboratory research focuses on:

Active Materials applications include, but are not restricted to, the following areas/industries:

  • automotive
  • aircraft
  • spacecraft
  • structural systems
  • bio-engineering
Advanced studies are, in large part, facilitated by AML's industrial partners as a result of close interarction and relationship developped between the industry and our researchers, and through funding by a number of governmental organizations.
